Yampa River Festival
The first Yampa River Festival was held in 1971, and it was organized by several locals. Now the event has garnered national attention, and attracts local competitors as well as those from other parts of the U.S.
The Yampa River Festival is a local event that is sponsored by the community and produced by notables in the area. It takes place on the first weekend in June, ever since 1981. Events at the river festival include the Downriver Race, Salmon Slalom (an upstream slalom), Crazy River Dog Contest, River Gumbo Dinner, Silent Auction, and an amazing Kayak Rodeo with talented competitors from around the country and the globe.
The Yampa River is perfect for kayakers of all abilities. It's not hard to have fun on the river, especially if you enjoy outdoor activities. Some river features that can be found throughout Steamboat Springs include the pond for beginners located at Fetcher Park, a challenging slalom course in Dr. Rich Weiss Park, and play waves and holes. The Rabbit Hole, Double Z Wave, Model T Hole, A hole, and the new D Hole are a few of your choices. New whitewater features continue to be developed so that each year the river season has great new ways for play boaters to have a whole lot of fun.
