Summer Recreation
Although it carries the banner of the name "Ski Town U.S.A," Steamboat Springs, Colorado offers ample summer recreation opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Situates in the idyllic Yampa Valley, Steamboat's outdoor allure stems from the sight of its emerald-green slopes, numerous hot springs, nearby parks and the constant flow of the Yampa River. Together, this landscape provides the ultimate playground for hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, tubing, kayaking and hot spring hopping.
Most of Steamboat's outdoor recreation pursuits are practiced in the 1.1-million acre Routt National Forest. Within the forest, the Mount Zirkel Wilderness provides the dramatic backdrop of rugged peaks in which to bike, backpack and play. Additionally, the Flat Tops Wilderness Area attracts hikers, horseback riders and hunters alike. The Steamboat Lake State Park is an ideal place to cool off and canoe, paddle or even rent a pontoon boat and explore 1,043-acre Steamboat Lake. Fish from the boat and enjoy your catch of the day by campfire. Just south of Steamboat, the Stagecoach State Park offers boundless watersports like water skiing and wakeless boating in the in the attractive 780-acre reservoir set amidst rolling hills and, interspersed with forests and grasslands. Within the proper town of Steamboat, the summertime slopes of Steamboat Ski Area will enthrall mountain bikers of all abilities. Intermediate bikers will find Spring Creek Trail ideal while advanced riders should head Rabbit Ears challenging dirt paths. While in town, take a stroll or rollerblade the Yampa River Core Trail, a four-mile path linking downtown Steamboat with the ski area. With all the activities Steamboat has to offer, the best way to actively unwind way is to soak in the 100 -plus world-famous hot springs. Head to the Steamboat Springs Swimming Pool and experience four outdoor mineral pools, each from 99 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit. One of the better known hot springs, Strawberry Hot Springs, lies six miles north of Steamboat is an ideal pit stop for bikers passing by the dirt access road. Whether your looking to soak in a hot spring, water-ski the reservoir or hike and horseback ride through national forests, Steamboat is a must-stop for summertime adventure.
