Steamboat Springs is still considered a small town, although now a year-round resort community. It has all the amenities of a large city, making moving and relocation an easy task. Denver is just 138 miles southeast if you feel a need for the city life.
How about a few stats? The current population in the city of Steamboat Springs is just over 10,000 where the population for Routt County is over 21,000. The median resident age in Steamboat is 32.4 years and the median household income is $54,650. As of last year, the average price for a home was $686,350 while the average condo went for $322,000. There is one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools as well as a couple specialty private schools. Average weather in December and January reaches highs of 28 degrees and lows of 2 degrees, while summer months high at 81 and low at 42. The seasons are distinct but residents love them all for various reasons.
Steamboat Springs, Colorado is home to year-round outdoor recreation. In the summer months, locals and visitors seek recreation opportunities like fly fishing, golfing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting and kayaking, climbing, enjoying the crystal clear waters of Stagecoach and Steamboat Lakes, and taking tours in hot air balloons, helicopters or on ATVs. Winter months bring just as many activities into the mix, including skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, cat skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice skating, ice fishing, tours on sleighs or in helicopters, and many spa services. There is even a winter driving school for those who are still a bit timid about driving on snow and ice.
The town is home to many open spaces, trails, and neighborhood parks. In the winter Mt. Werner is the place to be with over 120 ski trails. Snowmobiling is popular up along Rabbit Ears Pass. In the warmer months, Spring Creek Mountain Preserve provides a scenic place to enjoy wildlife along the Yampa River. The Yampa Core Trail runs seven miles along the river from Hwy 40 to James Brown Bridge through cottonwoods, fishing spots, scenic beaches, picnic areas, botanical gardens, and great spots to view kayakers play in waves. Other city parks include Brooklyn Park, a riverside park with a complete kayak course, nature trail, and fishing opportunities. Emerald Park is home to a ball field and soccer field. Check out Fetcher Park for a great frisbee area, Howelsen Beach for volleyball, and Howelsen Park to enjoy the rodeo grounds, skateboard park, tennis court, children’s play area, and hiking and biking trails. Stockbridge Park is home to a fantastic new playground along Yampa River Trail. During the summer you will see recreational sports leagues playing soccer, softball, volleyball, and flag football in any one of Steamboat’s many parks.
No matter how long you plan on staying, it is common to never leave. Steamboat Springs is not only a unique place because of its location, but becoming a resident seems to lead to a certain type of lifestyle and respect for the community.
