A legendary river in Colorado is the North Platte which is in close proximity to Steamboat Springs Colorado. This is the river that pioneers crossed on their journey west. This is the river where Indians hunted buffalo. And today, its legend continues as it is now a world renowned river known for its excellent fishing opportunities.

The North Platte River is known for its excellent fishing opportunities both in Wyoming and where it starts in Colorado. Part of this river has been designated as both a Wild Trout and a Gold Medal river.

The North Platte River has its origins in North Park where various creeks flowing down from the mountains combine to form this larger body of water. The river flows through North Park and continues on through various geological sites. Part of the time, this Gold Medal, Wild Trout river travels through a rocky canyon. It is in this canyon, that you can enjoy interesting rock formations and do a little wildlife viewing. Here the currents can sometimes become swift and during the early spring run off, the river has a fairly high stream flow. Even when the water is muddy, this is a great river to catch brown trout.

To get to this great fishing sport which is a little out of the way, take state highway 125 north out of Walden. At the junction of hwy's 125 and 127, take the left fork, continuing north on hwy 125. From this junction, it is about 4 miles to a parking area (signed) which is near the entrance to Northgate canyon. There is a good put-in for rafts at this point. You can hike along the river on its west side - the path gets worse the further you go into the canyon, but well worth the effort it takes to get to the North Platte.

If you are planning a vacation and want to go to one of the most premier fly fishing rivers in the west, then you should plan on venturing out to the North Platte River near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
