Summer Pro Rodeo Series
It's uncertain when the town of Steamboat Springs first hosted an organized rodeo competition, but old photographs provide evidence that competitions could have gone back to 1897. The summer Pro Rodeo Series carries on this tradition.
The rodeo in Steamboat has been a tradition (and even a way of life) for many people in the town. Although modern times are upon us, today the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series is still something to look forward to every Friday and Saturday night in the summer. The event starts late in June and finishes at the end of August. However, there are more performances on the July 4th weekend. The Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series is sanctioned by the PRCA and the WPRA.
At this event professional cowboys and cowgirls participate in a competition for prize money. They also compete for silver buckles in bareback and saddle bronc riding, calf, steer and team roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing, and bull riding.
Performances start at 7:30pm except for on the 4th of July, when the shows begin at 7:00pm so that fireworks can be displayed right after the rodeo has completed. The rodeo is held at Romick Arena, at the intersection of 5th Street and Howelsen Parkway. A western barbecue and other entertainment starts at 6:30 pm.
