more info
The Yampa River is one of the most hydrologically and biologically intact rivers in the West, supporting a diversity of native aquatic communities (including four federally listed fish species - Colorado pikeminnow, humpback chub, bonytail chub and razorback sucker - as well as candidate species such as the Colorado River cutthroat trout) and significant reaches of globally rare riparian plant communities.
The Yampa River supports a rich agricultural heritage that shapes the unique character of this area. It also represents an important opportunity to find ways to perpetuate a working landscape compatible with the conservation of a nationally significant river system.
The 172-mile stretch of the Yampa River borders private property. For recreational purposes, there are eight public access sites and a request to respect private property owners along the river.
This area offers a variety of camping experiences. With 25 developed sites, visitors can choose a site with a hardened pad, picnic table and grill. Campgrounds can provide excellent lake views as well as the Routt National Forest.
Many people take advantage of the calm hours both early and late in the day to do some fishing. Non-native warm-water species found in the reservoir include largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, channel catfish, bluegill, green sunfish, black crappie and western white sucker. Although not a warm-water species, some trout do live in the lake. Native species include round tail chub, speckled dace, flannel mouth sucker and blue head.
