A tributary of the Green River, the Yampa River is about 250 miles long and meanders through the state of Colorado.
In northwestern Colorado it rises in the Flat Tops and the Routt National Forest in southeastern Garfield County. Then it moves northeast past Yampa and north to Steamboat Springs. At this point it suddenly turns west, flowing into the plateau region on the north side of the Williams Fork Mountains. Here it trickles past the town of Craig until it's joined by the Little Snake River in Moffat County. This is located east of Dinosaur National Monument. The Yampa River joins the Green close to the border of Utah inside Dinosaur National Monument.
The Yampa Valley is a river community containing businesses, facilities and government buildings that are set up to promote the local economy and make sure everyone in the area has their needs fulfilled. .
