Museum of Northwest Colorado

The Museum of Northwest Colorado was first called the Moffat County Museum in 1964 mainly because until 1990, it was located in the Moffat County Courthouse. However, in 1991 it began operating at its current location at 590 Yampa Avenue.

If you're a fan of Western Americana, you won't be disappointed after visiting this museum. It has one of the biggest collections of this type of memorabilia in the world. View cowboy clothing from the early 1800s such as guns, gun leather, chaps, spurs, saddles, and other accessories. The collection is so well known that many of the items in its collection have been featured in several publications. Visitors, including school children from around the world, get to enjoy displays teaching you about what western life was like in Moffat County. Staff members of the museum are always available to help visitors and tourists if they have any questions about the local history in the area.

Recently the building has undergone a renovation and restoration, thanks to support from Moffat County. In addition, grants received from 1990 to 1996 for the project have added $155,400 to the pot. The Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Colorado Historical Society, and the Gates Foundation have all chipped in. In 1992 the building got a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
