Historic Downtown
Historic downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado boasts a population of 6,700. It was first formed in 1874. People came to Steamboat because of the 150 thermal mineral springs in the area famous for providing soothing comfort for a wide range of ills.
Steamboat Springs has a tradition of preserving and restoring key historic buildings in the town with the help of public and private donors. This has been helpful for the community at large, as well as for visitors.
The Carver Power Plant is a great example of what has been done in the community. The town took this empty industrial building and transformed it into the focal point of Centennial Hall, creating a new community facility where before there was simply unused space. It is located in the historic downtown area.
The facility now houses a community office and meeting space, features a brand new café, and has given the city an opportunity to support historic preservation in a visible way for all the community to see.
The city has already started gathering information on about 256 buildings in the core of the historic Old Town (commercial and residential areas) in addition to surrounding ranches and their structures in order to continue the preservation project.
